BERNARDO CARBAJAL
Bernardo specializes in the areas of personal injury, workers’ compensation, and Social Security disability law.
Bernardo joined the firm in September 2010. Prior to joining WSK , Bernardo worked at Mid Penn Legal Services located in Reading. He litigated on behalf of low-income tenants facing eviction. While at Mid Penn Bernardo oversaw community outreach and education in Berks County. In addition, he filed many affirmative suits for injunctive relief to prevent unlawful evictions by landlords. Bernardo has litigated at the administrative level and in the Magisterial District and Common Pleas courts. He has hosted the television show Ask a Lawyer on B.C.T.V. a Berks county community network. The show is administered and supervised by the Berks County Bar Association. Bernardo was a featured speaker at the Pennsylvania Bar Association’s Diversity Summit, “Why Diversity Matters.” He’s also appeared frequently on radio and television news programs both in English and Spanish to discuss legal issues impacting his community. Bernardo decided to go to law school to further his work with immigrant communities and the indigent population. He is a first generation Mexican-American. While in law school, he was a legal intern at the Community Justice Project in Harrisburg. He worked on civil rights cases, public benefits law and employment related claims. Bernardo was deeply involved with the federal case Lozano v. City of Hazleton; he conducted extensive legal research and helped sign the lead plaintiffs in the case. Bernardo was also a legal intern at North Penn Legal Services in Bethlehem where he worked on legal issues concerning housing, employment, and Social Security law. Bernardo is admitted to practice law in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
Bernardo teaches the United States Constitution to students at Tyson-Schoener Elementary in Reading. He was a member of the Act 47 Community Committee. Bernardo was also the Chair of the Housing Committee for the Rebuilding Reading Commission that was charged by the Mayor of Reading to recommend policies that address Reading’s indigent population. Bernardo serves on both the Governmental Affairs Committee and the Diversity Committee for the Berks County Bar Association. He is a board member for the Berks County Latino Chamber of Commerce.
Bernardo has also been appointed by the Pennsylvania Senate to serve on The Interbranch Commission on Gender, Racial & Ethnic Fairness.
In 1998, Bernardo earned his undergraduate degree in Political Science at the University of California, Los Angeles. He earned his law degree from Penn State Dickinson School of Law in 2008. Bernardo is a Martin Luther King Fellow and an IOLTA Fellow.
