Supplemental Security Income
Supplemental Security Income benefits (“SSI”), which are administered by the Social Security Administration, are potentially available to those individuals who have been unable to work for at least one year.  Eligibility is not based upon past employment history or paying taxes into the Social Security system.  Rather, an individual must only meet certain financial and U.S. residency requirements, in addition to being unable to work due to illness or injury. Additionally, children with severe health problems that caused significant limitations in their functioning may also be entitled to benefits depending upon their parents’ financial situation.
